Fire Destroys First Floor And Roof Of House In Golders Green

Roads were gridlocked at the weekend as fire crews tackled a blaze that whipped through a house under renovation.

Most of the first floor and roof of the two-storey semi-detached house, in Finchley Road, Golders Green, was damaged by flames.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called at 7.19pm on Sunday (April 31) and had the flames under control by 9.15pm.

Around 10 people left a neighbouring property before firefighters arrived, London Fire Brigade said.

Radio DJ @NickyHorne, who posted a video of the incident, said on Twitter that firecrews arrived within four minutes of the first call.

He added: “I’ve never seen @LondonFire up close. What struck me was that no one was shouting orders, no words were spoken, each person knew exactly what to do and they carried out the job in complete silence. Amazing work.

“Building site so lots of flammable materials. No one injured but air now thick with toxic smoke. Going back inside and closing windows.” ⁦

Crews from West Hampstead, Hendon, Soho, Tottenham and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and Metropolitan Police.
