A visit to a warehouse store and buying in bulk is a great way in order to cut costs. Here are 8 reasons you should consider shopping at Costco.
It was over twenty years ago that I started shopping at Costco-the-store-formerly-known-as-Price-Club. FishPapa was with me at the time. We were dating back then. (His moniker is Fish.) We resided at Santa Barbara; the nearest Price Club was in Oxnard. It was a pleasant 45 minutes drive and was worth it.
It was often his mom and me who made the trip, stopping for lunch near the Soup Plantation or grabbing a hot dog from the Food Court. A few years later, during my very first pregnancies, Fish and I would take the long trip through the evening traffic to enjoy hot dogs!
Through over the years, Costco has come to offer our family huge discounts on many products that we purchase regularly. Although we don’t purchase every item we consume at the warehouse but we do buy quite a few items.
Costco membership is an invaluable weapon in my fight against the high cost of groceries. Here’s why:
- The lowest prices on numerous items of daily use
Costco provides the best price on a lot of the bread, dairy and fresh produce we purchase. Organic eggs are available for £3.50/dozen? Yes, please.
My list of staple items includes: sourdough, rye and sourdough breads English muffins and bagels as well as deli turkey breasts. Tillamook cheese and shredded mozzarella and eggs, sausages milk, yogurt pasta, bacon, beans tomatoes, olives, tomato products apple, bananas, and other spices.
- Easy bulk purchasing
I purchase lots of food. Lots. There are some things don’t make sense to purchase in small quantities. The bulk purchasing — and the bulk price -really suits me. I love purchasing the bulk items when looking to cook something in the freezer.
Be aware of costs. Costco gigantic package isn’t always the most affordable. I keep a price guide in my mind to ensure that I’m not paying more than I need to.
- Discount non-food stuff
We’ve purchased orthotics, eyeglasses tires, eyeglasses, and auto loans from Costco. The majority of them have been excellent bargains. Costco offers tools, appliances dishes, clothing and more. There isn’t a lot of choice however Costco’s prices tend to be competitive.
- Fantastic selection of healthier options
Certain items I’ll only purchase at Costco because they offer a more complete list of ingredients. For example, did you realize that the majority of commercial tuna comes with soybean oil? Not at Costco.
In the last few years, Costco is offering more natural and healthier food items. I’m loving it!
- Cash back when you buy
After much screaming and kicking from me after which we decided to upgrade to an Executive membership. This membership provides the benefit of 2% cash back on purchases up to £750 over a 12 month period. The Executive membership is more (£110 as opposed to £55) but it has been able to pay for its own.
I’m unable to find the info on their website, but at the point we made an upgrade, they informed them that the “earnings” review will be the amount of £55. If we didn’t earn as much in our two percent pay period, they’d provide the money to us. The last the year’s payment was for £62 therefore we earned back £7.

- Amazing food court
Although it’s not a healthy food Costco’s food court does offer take-away/junk food at affordable prices. You can purchase the Kosher hotdog and soda for just a dollar. Is there anyone else who can do such a thing?
My pizza at home is much better than Costco’s, however their pizza is quite acceptable for ten dollars.
- Food that is fun and delicious
Costco has a variety of products that you might not consider buying and yet are amazing. Be aware that certain items might not be worth it and may not be what you need or be in a way that is too large in order to be consumed at a regular pace without getting rotten.
You can also find an array of amazing things there.
- No-questions-asked return policy
If you aren’t satisfied with the product you purchase from Costco You can return it with no problem. The item must be in its original packaging, however they’re great about returning items even if you don’t have receipts.
My plants died within a few days after planting one time and they made me remove the plants and then return them. Then , I got my refund of the money. Easy-peasy.
This policy allows you to try somethingnew, without risk. They began carrying canned skipjack tuna last year at a price that was significantly lower that their albacore. I tried it and we weren’t impressed with it. I returned the remaining cans from the pack and was able to get the money I paid back.
